Software Inventory

This project reimagines our company’s existing Software Inventory catalogue for our web application. Leading this project alongside another designer, we took this project from concept to developer-ready high fidelity mockups.

Focus on the user’s personal inventory

A series of user interviews and live demos were previously conducted by our user researcher. I used this data to focus our design efforts.

Display a list of different software versions on the user's network

Simplify and streamline filtering to make software easier to find

Provide software recommendations from other areas of the application

Goal: reduce confusion and errors, improve network security, improve customer retention and satisfaction.

Filtering

The current software catalogue requires users to click through potentially nine tiers of categories before arriving at a software to download.

User data from the current catalogue shows that many of our users abandon the current navigation process after 4 or 5 categories, and our interviews show they often only understand what the higher level categories mean.

This streamlined version only shows categories that are relevant to our users, and maxes out at 4 tiers.

Software Details

Once a user clicks into a table row on the software inventory, users are brought to a Software Details page.

Software Versions

I proposed that our users have an easy way to see how many software versions are deployed on their network. This is one of the major sources of confusion with the current catalogue.

Software Recommendations

Users can access tailored software recommendations for their assets from their asset inventory. The goal is to add banners to asset detail screens when there are major releases or other significant changes to software a user owns.

Impact

This project is not yet in production. Approximately 200 participants have ranked their experience with this upcoming feature as "very positive" and "high priority" when demoed at Cisco's annual technical conference, Cisco Live.
